Jenoptik Secures Added Value by Successfully Migrating to SAP S/4HANA®

“SNP’s solutions and consulting services had already effectively supported us during previous SAP projects –and this now includes the complex SAP S/4HANA conversion. Using the BLUEFIELD™approach was the ideal way for us to safely complete the conversion and migration project in the planned timeframe, because we wanted to introduce SAP S/4HANA quickly. The BLUEFIELD™approach already enables us to implement organizational changes and selected innovations in this first step. In the subsequent innovation and evolution phases, we want to fully unlock the potential and transform further business processes in a forward-looking manner.” - Dr. Christian Königsdörffer, Program Manager for Global Business Excellence, Jenoptik “SNP’s solutions and consulting services had already effectively supported us during previous SAP projects –and this now includes the complex SAP S/4HANA conversion. The Challenge

By converting its existing SAP R/3 system PJA to SAP S/4HANA, Jenoptik aimed to harmonize processes, master data and reporting. The goal of the project was to provide optimal support for the global business and facilitate future leaps in innovation.

The R/3 system, which had grown over the years and contained 30 plants, 40 company codes, and around 20 sales and 10 purchasing organizations, needed to be completely migrated and then archived. Among other things, this involved a plant split and merge within a company code across all applications and including the full history.

To implement the organizational changes and planned innovations as quickly as possible, the first step was to securely switch to an SAP S/4 system with the most important functions. This is to be followed by an innovation phase in which further useful S/4 functions will be introduced.

The Benefits

  • Consistent data migration to SAP S/4HANA took place with a downtime of only 24 hours
  • Jenoptik benefits from high flexibility in adapting data to target customizingSNP’s selective migration approach is the only technical solution on the market that could meet the plant split and merge requirements

The Solution

Having already relied on SNP’s software and consulting for SAP projects in the past, Jenoptik also chose SNP for its move to SAP S/4HANA. SNP’s selective approach (BLUEFIELD™) offered the only technical option on the market that could meet the complex requirements of a flexible migration that included the full history and data changes. A consistent concept was developed for the intended plant split and merge including the full history. Here, it was advantageous that SNP already had specific system knowledge and had already earned the trust of Jenoptik.

The automated end-to-end software ensured rapid project implementation as well as minimal business disruptions and system downtimes during the data migration. This also supported the customer’s planning: All transformation steps were visually represented in the analysis and planning phase, which provided complete transparency in terms of the total time and costs.

To ensure that Jenoptik can make the most use of the added value associated with SAP S/4HANA for its own future-oriented business focus, SNP is still supporting the ongoing innovation phase with process and transformation consulting. SNP’s comprehensive support in all project areas provides considerable help to the internal Jenoptik team.

Key Facts

Project Type

SAPS/4HANA transformation with the selective BLUEFIELD™ approach.

Highlights

The two-phase project approach enabled Jenoptik to quickly implement the new SAP S/4HANA system and make the best possible use of the associated potential to advance the company’s digital focus.

Despite high business requirements, the migration project was completed on time and within budget. The software-based approach from analysis to go-live ensured transparency and predictability. Longer system downtimes, which can quickly lead to high costs, were avoided.

SNP supported and supervised the SAP S/4HANA project in all aspects from project planning and management to technical migration and transformation consulting, allowing Jenoptik to conserve its own resources.

Scope

Harmonization of processes, master data and reporting throughout the move to SAP S/4HANA. Migration of the existing SAP R/3 system to an empty SAP S/4HANA system with the most important functions for the business. Subsequent innovation phase to implement additional solutions in the new SAP S/4HANA system.
