With headquarters in Lucerne (Switzerland), the Swiss Steel Group is one of the world’s leading producers of special long steel products. As one of Europe’s largest producers of electrical steel, the company offers high-quality solutions for demanding industries worldwide. As part of a strategic portfolio adjustment in 2024, organizational changes required a structured carve-out of selected data sets. SNP supported the project by migrating the data securely and efficiently.
With around 7,400 employees in over 25 countries, the Swiss Steel Group generated revenues of EUR 2.5 billion in 2024. The company uses only steel scrap in electric arc furnaces, making it a global leader in the field of sustainable steel.
As part of the strategic development of its business portfolio in 2024, the Swiss Steel Group adjusted its organizational structure and sold selected sales companies in Eastern Europe. The goal was to further strengthen the Group’s focus on its core markets and competencies, reduce operational complexity, and ensure long-term competitiveness.
In addition to organizational and legal requirements, this structural adjustment also required extensive technical preparations. In this context, several company codes had to be clearly separated, and the relevant data had to be provided to the new owners in a structured manner.
“The company code carve-out required meticulous planning and a clean technical implementation. In addition to operational data, we also needed to transfer historically accumulated archive data in a structured manner. Therefore, we leveraged additional expertise within our partner network from data archiving specialist anuwo to ensure a smooth, audit-proof migration,” explains Darijan Jerkovic, Project Manager at SNP.
With 20 years of expertise in data archiving in the SAP environment, the German company anuwo GmbH from Speyer offers end-to-end solutions for document management and information lifecycle management (ILM) of productive and archived data. Their solutions ensure targeted and compliant data management, storage, and deletion.
In addition to the carve-out and data migration, SNP implemented the data conversion including the new infrastructure. Even in the age of digitalization, archiving remains a key challenge: Data must not only be migrated securely, but must also remain accessible. In addition, economic factors play a major role as well. One terabyte of data can result in costs of up to EUR 100,000 a year. SNP partner anuwo met these requirements with its versatile tools, bridging the gap between technical implementation and practical application. As every data migration is an individual process, anuwo also opted for a customized solution for Swiss Steel Group.
The original objective of completing the project within three months had to be adjusted due to the complexity of the data. Nevertheless, the project was successfully completed on schedule. To provide structure and transparency for everyone involved, the tasks were divided into three main phases:
In today’s dynamic markets, companies must react quickly to change. This often involves complex transformation scenarios such as mergers, acquisitions, or divestitures. Secure and fast data migration and carve-out processes are essential for success. SNP was commissioned to migrate the data as part of a strategic portfolio adjustment.
