Reducing SAP data-related risks for TotalEnergies by decommissioning 17 SAP ECC legacy systems

Kyano Datafridge delivers secure, cost-effective SAP data access for TotalEnergies after system retirement

At some point, legacy systems stop delivering value and start creating risks. 17 SAP ECC systems from TotalEnergies were no longer used operationally, but kept frozen as their data had to remain available for audits and compliance, leaving little room for a simple shutdown. Those systems, however, still consumed significant resources and raised security concerns.

The challenge

17 legacy SAP ECC systems from TotalEnergies were kept frozen, holding a total of around 100 TB of data. These systems were no longer used for daily operations, yet they continued to generate significant infrastructure and storage costs. To address this, the decision was taken to retire the obsolete systems and move the required legacy data to the cloud.

This decision was driven not only by cost, but also by growing security and compliance concerns. As the legacy systems were no longer supported, they created increasing security and compliance risks. At the same time, the data stored in these systems (particularly financial information) had to remain accessible for audit and compliance purposes. Shutting the systems down without a secure and auditable alternative was not an option.

The decommissioning initiative came with several challenges. The scope evolved over time as additional requirements emerged, and many of the legacy systems were old and slow, making data handling and extraction more complex. The solution had to be robust, flexible, and able to cope with these technical constraints. On top of that, the project had to be delivered within a very tight timeframe.

The solution

SNP and its Kyano Datafridge solution were selected as the foundation for this decommissioning initiative.

Kyano Datafridge is designed to safely retire obsolete SAP ECC systems while preserving secure, audit-ready access to historical data. Data is offloaded to a cost-efficient storage environment, helping significantly reduce long-term storage and operational costs, without disrupting day-to-day work for business or audit users. Access to retired data remains available through familiar SAP interfaces, supported by more than 200 out-of-the-box transactions, which can also be adapted or extended to meet specific business or compliance requirements.

Kyano Datafridge also enables selective decommissioning, allowing organizations to retire only the data they no longer need in production, while keeping the remaining data active in the live system. This flexible approach helps reduce data volumes and costs without sacrificing access to critical information. With its combination of security, usability, scalability, and flexibility, Kyano Datafridge proved to be the go-to solution for decommissioning the complex legacy SAP landscapes at TotalEnergies.

The result: 17 decommissioned systems and long-term peace of mind

The project was delivered in 18 months. SNP decommissioned seven SAP ECC systems directly and, at the same time, onboarded Accenture to handle the remaining systems using the same standardized tools and methodology.

To further simplify the program, SNP procured and managed the required AWS storage on behalf of TotalEnergies and continues to operate and maintain the archived data. This meant that SNP delivered all-in-one services including operations, system maintenance, and storage management.

Usability was a key focus throughout the project. Even after the legacy systems were switched off, business and audit users retained easy access to all retired data through the familiar SAP GUI. This continuity gave stakeholders confidence that critical information would remain available whenever needed.

By the end of the project, the key objectives were achieved. All legacy SAP data was securely offloaded to a significantly more cost-efficient storage environment, obsolete systems were safely retired to reduce costs and security risks, and financial and historical data remained fully accessible for audit and compliance purposes.

As a result, TotalEnergies was able to decommission unused SAP systems with confidence – lowering operational costs while maintaining full compliance and long-term peace of mind.
