SPI Power Incorporated

Energy companies keep mergers and acquisitions as a part of their strategy to sustain growth, while governments around the world are looking to address the need for reliable, affordable and sustainable energy sources.

The challenge

In 2020, former SPI majority shareholder Steag GmbH decided to refocus its business strategy to align with the growing renewable energy market. As part of this shift, it divested its stake in SPI to co-shareholder Aboitiz Power Corporation (AP). To support the transition, SPI needed to carve out the relevant assets, together with the migration and upgrade to SAP S/4HANA, as part of their business transformation journey.

The solution

SNP’s Kyano platform with the Bluefield® approach was used to perform the carve-out and migration of transactional data and upgrade to SAP S/4HANA at the same time. The carve-out involved migrating one company code from the legacy ECC system to the new SAP S/4HANA environment. The entire project
was completed within six months, and the migration cutover was finalized in just 48 hours of planned downtime. SPI wanted to upgrade their ECC 6.0 system and convert their existing production ECC systems to SAP S/4HANA Cloud. Without jeopardizing the source systems, SNP created a shell copy of the production system and performed the migration tasks on the copy. Once the migration and verification were complete, the updated data was copied to the target SAP S/4HANA Cloud system, enabling a smooth and secure go-live.

Our partnership with bneXt

In partnership with SNP, bneXt served as the prime contractor for the project, overseeing data migration services and leveraging SNP’s data transformation software. Together, bneXt and SNP utilized SNP’s Kyano platform and Bluefield® methodology to efficiently carve out, migrate, and upgrade SPI Power Inc.'s ECC 6.0 and convert the existing ECC production systems to SAP S/4HANA Cloud.

Benefits

  •  SNP automation and tool-based method enabled the rapid separation and handover of the SAP system, achieving the target date and ensuring data privacy.
  • Multiple projects were combined in a single go-live, such as business partner implementation at the same time as the S/4HANA migration.
  • The risk of disruption to the business was reduced thanks to minimized system downtime.

Scope

  • Migration of SAP ECC EHP 8 to SAP S/4HANA on RISE, including the modules FI, CO, PS, PM, MM and MRP
  • Source system: ECC EHP 8 (database size: 1.5 TB, users: < 500)
  • Target system: SAP S/4HANA on RISE and modules

We embraced the opportunity for business transformation instead of doing just the carve-out and migration, as we were comfortable and confident of the technical expertise of the team managing our project. This is a major step for us, and I’m confident in our continued success because of working with quality solution and service partners like SNP and bneXt.
